VMCI Opens a Training Session on the Rules of Origin
Dili, 23 July 2024
The Vice Minister of Commerce and Industry, His Excellency Mr. Augusto Júnior Trindade, inaugurated a training session on Monday, 22 July, at the Maubara Room in Timor Plaza. The session focuses on understanding and identifying the origin of goods from producing countries to enhance import and export processes.
HE Mr. Augusto Júnior Trindade emphasized that the training aims to educate participants on the origins of goods, particularly within the ASEAN marketing context. "This training is crucial for those involved in trade, as it influences tariffs and optimizes the application of origin rules within national borders," stated the Vice Minister.
Understanding the origin of products is vital for Timor-Leste's participation in global and regional trade agreements, especially with our accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and our anticipated membership in ASEAN by 2025. As we integrate further into the global economy, knowledge of product origins will enable us to benefit more effectively from trade agreements, stimulate economic growth, and create industrial opportunities.
The Vice Minister encouraged trainees to fully engage with the training, highlighting its importance. "I urge all of you to participate actively, ask questions, and contribute to discussions. Your involvement is invaluable for collective knowledge and the success of this training initiative," he said.
The training will span five days, led by experts on the rules of origin from Cambodia. Participants include representatives from line ministries such as the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Customs Authority, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, ADB, and other stakeholders.
